Auckland, New Zealand: the local creative scene came out in full force to support the next generation of New Zealand talent.

An impressive runway in a converted shed on the waterfront of New Zealand’s largest city made for a dramatic location for the 2017 AUT Rookie show. First up were the year one students who presented their denim designs. Briefed to create jeans for the iconic Levi’s brand, the students pushed boundaries and displayed their creative flair to come up with some truly unique takes on denim that were styled to perfection with the quintessential white tee and immaculate chucks.

the graduate designers with their sensational collections really had the crowd buzzing.

However while the year ones were impressive, it was the graduate designers with their sensational collections that really had the crowd buzzing. Highlights included Wilbur Hsu’s collection. Inspired by the past, the collection took the form of poetic communications with delicate, feminine and romantic silks. Hsu’s collection embodied such a lightness, that the audience also felt like it was floating amongst the clouds as the pieces made their way down the runway.

Ariane Ilagan’s monsters collection wowed with its conceptual and experimental designs. Fur and tartan mixes were transformed into playful and practical jackets. While chunky knitwear that was just a little bit outrageous expressed the monster within through the jelly trembling shaped legs. The end result of Ilagan’s collection? We were left wishing that occasionally monsters were real.

The show culminated with Finau Pai’s pulsating collection. As models sashayed down the catwalk to loud, pumping music, the crowd hollered and whistled. Our favourite look, a fuschia coat of exaggerated proportions that was inspired by clowns and utilitarian wear. The hypnotic collection was the perfect juxtaposition of humour, strength and power.
